TRIBUTE TO KOURAGEUS
1996-2005

I understand he was a beautiful foal. My first impression of Kourageus, however, was of a weedy, scrawny yearling and, to my untrained eye, he was the least impressive of the three colts Linda got from her Kouvay Bey breedings. My amateur assessment couldn't have been more wrong. The next time I saw Kourageus was a coming three-year old, brought down from Linda's ranch to be started under saddle. The caterpillar had transformed into the butterfly. Tall and leggy, sleek as a racehorse, and endowed with the keen intelligence and tremendous heart of his mother Khemecho (a Khemosabi daughter), he was one of the most fun and exciting horses I've ever ridden. He led a charmed life. Aside from his studly duties, he was blessed with having exceptional riders on his back, the last of whom was Stephanie Emmons, who beautifully rode him to a very successful endurance career. Tragically, after contracting a rare case of Western Encephalitis in spite of recent inoculations, his life ended on August 12, 2005. I know you join me in extending our most heartfelt condolences to Linda Fisher for the loss of her shining star, and to Stephanie, who loved him, devotedly nursed him, and cradled his beautiful head as he left this world.

Accomplishments
He started his career with one 25 miler in 2001. Hannah Pruss rode him at the the Kenlyn Urban Challenge in the Fall to an 8th place finish. Then in 2002, Hannah and Paschal Karl rode him on 50 milers - he was so well behaved on the trail and at the trailer that people didn't even know he was a stallion!! At the end of 2003, Kourageus met a new endurance rider, Stephanie Emmons, who would love and cherish him till the end. Her goal was to continue building him toward an illustrious career-he had amazing heart, speed and desire and really LOVED endurance riding. She rode him to an AHA Region 10 First Place and Best Condition, AHA Region 6 Top 5 plus many other AERC Top 10 placings. Before this untimely passing, he had 855 overall miles with NO PULLS and was just getting stronger and faster. Kourageus was an easy-to-handle breeding stallion with some promising offspring. It is everyone's hope that they follow in their sire's footsteps of gentleness, athleticism and talent. Linda, and everyone touched by this outstanding stallion, will miss him tremendously. He was truly a nice horse to be around.
