2011 - An Extraordinarily Different Tevis Year

The way we figured it is, if you’re going to do just one 100 miler in your lifetime, you might as well go for the one that everyone has heard about. So, we did! It all started four years ago. My husband, Bob Bischoff, was the driving force. He wanted to do it so bad, but, life got in the way with setbacks. Then after talking to my sister, Linda Fisher of Kenlyn Arabians in Colorado, I got Tevis fever also. With the stars and moon aligned just right this year, we were on our way.

We were all set to go in July, but due to the extreme winter with heavy snow and an uncontrollable American River, the ride was postponed until Oct. 8, 2011. That was the only available date the Western States Trail Foundation committee could get. Little did we know that we would encounter the same problems in October with too much snow in the Sierras. It would have been a sight to see our horses going up Squaw Valley ski resort as the skiers were coming down! The WSTF committee found the two feet of snow in the high country unsafe. They would either have to cancel again or use the part of the trail that was not snowed in. That’s what they did. We started in Auburn and went half way back, turned around and came back to Auburn. It was a good plan using the trail that was dry and in great shape. Linda Fisher, who had completed the Tevis twice on her two previous attempts, was delighted to see the trail from Auburn to Foresthill in the daylight. Also, everyone was able to see the new scenery to Volcano Canyon and back.

After two days of rain, snow and cold weather, the sun broke through and it was beautiful on ride day. The day went perfect. The riders we encountered were in good spirits and the vets were very kind. Volunteers were helpful and of course, our pit crew worked the hardest. We couldn’t have done it without them. The time just flew by at the first hour hold in Foresthill and I could still get on and off my horse. Life was good. As we returned for our second hour hold in Foresthill, it was starting to get darker. So, we geared up with headlights on our helmets (which we never used) and a few glow sticks on our breastcollars. The moon was wonderful, but when you went in the trees, it was pure black. The horses never passed the water. They knew exactly where it was even in the dark. We continued on our steady pace. Actually the trail looked better at night because you couldn’t see how steep it dropped off. By the time we had passed our last Gate & Go at the Lower Quarry, we were starting to get cold, but we only had 10 more miles to go and had plenty of time, so we came in slow and easy.

We made our victory lap around the Fairgrounds arena and felt happy, tired and relieved to have completed the 100 miles in one really long day. We had made it along with my sister Linda and four people in our Kenlyn group that all completed. Getting off the horse was not a pretty sight, but it was worth it, and I couldn’t be more ecstatic. I felt that this experience should last me the rest of my life. But, then as the week went on, I was feeling better and found that I could walk again. Heck, now I’m thinking maybe I could ride the Tevis again someday!

Comments From Our Proud Customers
I have been thinking that I need to write you about our Awesome Knight filly out of our Arab/Trakehner mare. "Rio" turned 4 this spring and we have started riding her! She is truly "awesome!" So easy to train! She side-passes, does turns on the forehand, backs nicely, walks-trots-canters-- and only been ridden 4 times! Lots of ground-work is the key! The second time we rode her, we went to the cattle pasture and moved cattle. There were four of us, so I guess she felt safe with the herd.

I will get some photos taken here soon to send to you. She is a real beauty!

I thought you may get a kick out of hearing that Xpression and I finished the 5 day Grand Canyon XP. He was GREAT. Nine horses finished all 5 days and we finished fourth in 34:27. We could have gone faster, but being his first multi-day ride I held him back quite a bit. We finished Top 10 three out of five days. On days 2-5 he was out in front and leading the group I was riding with much of the time! When we finished day 5, he seemed as fresh as starting on day 1. I think we are ready for the Ft. Howes 100.

I hope you are doing well and look forward to seeing you out on the trail next year.

Dave

Horse & Rider Spotlight

Carol Bischoff & Kenlyn Steele

National Limited Distance Mileage Champion, Senior Division
By Steve Bradley

My husband Bob and I started endurance riding in 2007 and enjoyed it so much we couldn’t stop. So, we decided to spend our retired years seeing the country and going camping with our horses.

I really appreciated the support of my husband, who was with me on every ride. I won first place with Kenlyn Steele+ totaling 960 miles and Bob won second place with Chocolate Ice, totaling 895 miles in the 2008 - National Limited Distance Mileage Championship. We also both won first and second in our Pacific Southwest Region. Kenlyn Steele+ received second place in the regional Best Condition standings, while Bob split his time with our five year old mare Kenlyn Escapade and received fifth place in the Pacific Southwest Regional Limited Distance Mileage Championship, with 245 miles.

We acquired our horses from Kenlyn Arabians in Colorado and Linda Fisher did not steer us wrong. She has provided us with excellent endurance horses and sound advice. She is our mentor and we couldn’t have done this without her.

We started our year out with frozen water buckets and frozen fingers in Arizona. In New Mexico over New Years, we were in the presents of the King of Malaysia, a Princess of Saudi Arabia, members from Japan, and some of the big names in this Endurance sport. Steele won BC both days, so we were off to a good start and it just encouraged us more to continue our adventure.

It rained all day at Warner Springs, California, thank goodness for those hot springs and the wonderful amenities that go with that ride. Our next ride was back-to-back; we rode in New Mexico, did sightseeing in-between, and then dodged the cactus in Wickenburg, Arizona. One rider was not so lucky, Ouch!

Strawberry Fields, in Utah, was truly the most beautiful ride we did all year. We rode through Aspen forests, green meadows with flowers, rivers with beaver dams and wild strawberry plants everywhere.

In June, we returned to Warner Springs, but this time we had hot weather over 100 degrees and ended up in the cold pools instead of the hot ones. In Parker, Colorado as we were leaving, we could see a tornado touch down in our rear view mirror! Serious weather in Colorado! On the Owyhee, Idaho ride we not only accomplished our goal of riding all five days, but ended up going home with the Best Overall Times and the 5 Day Best Condition Award.

We ended Kenlyn Steele’s 2008 season in October at the beautiful Moab Canyon Pioneer. Here we rode dressed as cats and enjoyed the trick-or-treaters that came around to our horse trailers.

Steele was wonderful to ride, she was strong, had her steady pace, and knew what to do on the trail. Steele is taking a well deserved break after all her hard work and is running free with a herd of horses on 250 acres in Fort Collins, Colorado, for the winter. I am so proud of her and loved the memorable year we had together.
